Whether it’s a book or Broadway play that’s being turned into a movie, everyone loves a great adaptation, and movies making their way to the Broadway stage is no different. From great ones like The Lion King to new ones like Magic Mike, there’s something about musicals we just can’t get enough of. Now if only the upcoming Mean Girls can live up to the original (C’mon, Tina Fey. We believe in you.)

HERE ARE 10 FILM TO STAGE MUSICALS

Legally Blonde

Legally Blonde was such a hit with fans that it’s no wonder when they decided to bring Elle Woods to the stage.  After following her ex-boyfriend to Harvard in hopes of winning him back, she actually discovers that she has what it takes to have a career in law and proves everyone wrong. Which is always the best revenge, am I right?

The Lion King

Also known as the movie that always made me cry as a kid — how dare Scar trick Simba like that and then kill Mufasa!— The Lion King has become one of the most iconic Disney films to be brought to life on stage and with good reason. From the costumes to the music, it’s no wonder why it’s become one of the longest running stage productions.

Billy Elliott

Telling the story of a young boy growing up in County Durham in 1984, Billy Elliot is all about following your dreams as 11 year-old Billy goes on an journey to become a ballet dancer. The movie was released in 2000 and debuted on the London stage five years later. With music from Elton John, the play became a huge hit and went on to tour Australia and North America while winning 10 Tony Awards along the way.

9 to 5

Based on the 1980 movie, 9 to 5 started it’s theatrical run in 2009 and ran until 2012. From Broadway to the UK, this story follows 3 women as they beat their boss at his own game. After harassing his female employees,  the ever resourceful women take it upon themselves to kidnap and tie him up in his own house while they take over the office.

Catch me if you Can

Currently still running in the States, Catch Me if You Can is based on the 2002 movie starring Leonardo Di Caprio. Based on real life events, FBI agent Carl Hanratty attempts to catch Frank Abagnale Jr. after he goes on the run for conning millions of dollars for falsely acting as a Pan Am pilot, doctor and legal prosecutor, all before his 19th birthday.

Magic Mike

Now here’s a play women will be lining up for.  While working as a roofer by day, Mike Lane transforms into Magic Mike when the sun sets. After being taught everything he knows from his mentor Dallas, a.k.a. the “Yoda of stripping,” Mike becomes the centre of attention when performing with his fellow male strippers so aptly named “the Kings of Tampa.” The confirmed musical has no set date just yet but lucky for us, we can always watch the movie.

A Clockwork Orange

In celebration of its 50th anniversary, Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange will get the stage production treatment. Filled with violence and dark ideations, the British movie became extremely popular with movie goers, I’m actually surprised it didn’t happen sooner.

Sister Act

After witnessing her mobster boyfriend commit a murder, lounge singer Deloris Van Cartier, is transformed into Sister Mary Clarence and is tucked away into a convent as part of the FBI’s witness protection program. When her attempts to fit into the convent’s traditional ways prove a bit challenging, she finds her place as the choir coach.

Dirty Dancing

Taking place in 1963, Dirty Dancing follows all around good girl Frances “Baby” Houseman as she develops a crush on dance instructor Johnny Castle while on vacation. Her crush turns into something bigger as she replaces his dance partner and he must teach her their routine. Oh the romance…

The Wizard of Oz

Everyone loves The Wizard of Oz and with its great music and costumes, so it’s only fitting that this would finally be turned into a musical. Currently on its Canadian run, the musical of the classic has been a huge hit with audiences. Honestly, would we expect anything less from an Andrew Lloyd Webber production?
